In my opinion, it all depends upon how much a person consumes. I believe that consuming small amounts of synthesised chemicals is okay, however, when a person consumes more than a serving of something flavored with artificial sweeteners it can become dangerous to their health. There has been much conflict over artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame, which is commonly found in diet soft drinks and also in some brands of chewable vitamins. Parents try to keep there children away from Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners because it can cause health problems and there is no nutritional value that comes from it. If a healthy person decides to consume some artificial flavored beverage or food item I believe it is perfectly okay as long as it is consumed in moderation. I honestly cannon taste the difference between artificial and natural sweeteners in things such as cakes and beverages.

When I eat or drink something I would like to be able to believe the information on the nutrition label. However, I know that companies can alter what the label says to make their product more appealing. It is aggravating to know that I might be consuming something with much more fat than the label says and I would never know unless I checked it myself. I believe that companies should tell you exactly what is in their product and find others ways to promote it than tricking their consumers. Companies also can miscalculate when creating these labels that is why it is important to double check their values if you really want to know what you are consuming.

Nutrition and being mindful of what is in my food has always been important to me. As a runner, I try to eat mostly natural, organic, and whole grain products. When it comes to sugar, I don’t believe that substitutes are healthy. People don’t realize that sugar is good for you, but the problem comes when people eat too much and then just sit at home all day doing nothing. Sugar is meant to be quickly broken down and absorbed into the blood stream for energy, so as long as you engage in enough physical activity, you shouldn’t have to worry about sugar substitutes.

I personally do not like the taste of foods containing artifical sweeteners or fat substitutes. I don’t drink soda, but if I did I would hate diet drinks. I mean if your going to be unhealthy you might as well go the full nine yards and get a cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper or something.

I think the idea of only being submitted to low or no calorie foods or drinks is absolutely retarded. Another common misconception of nutrition is that calories are always bad. Everyone needs calories to live, that’s a fact. The problem is that almost every American eats way too many calories everyday, much more than they are recommended. The recommended calorie diet is 2000 calories per day, and that doesn’t factor in physical exercise. Anyone consuming much more than 2000 without any physical exercise is pretty much asking to gain weight. As a runner, I have to have large amounts of calories to burn during workouts, so for me, the foods i eat need to have lots of calories rather than few or none.

Personally, I think that artificial sweeteners and fat substitutes are not terrible for you. Some people would argue that the chemicals in these products are bad for you and that in the long run we may have to deal with the consequences for using them. In my own opinion, I believe that anything and everything can be considered “bad” for you if you take it in excess. If someone wants to put a little Splenda in their coffee in the morning, why should it matter if it has chemicals in it? If the chemicals were bad for you, they would not be put in the sweetener to begin with. Before the products are ever sold they are tested and retested in labs to make sure that they are safe for the public to consume. Some artificial sweeteners that I have actually tried do have an after taste that tend to ruin the food for me (usually it would be a drink though.) However, since Splenda and others are made from sugar and other natural products, they taste normal in small doses. I think it was awesome that some restaurants like McDonalds switched to using oil that is better for their customers. For people on diets, artificial sweeteners and other synthetic substitutes are actually beneficial. They can help a dieter by not only lowering calorie intake but also by raising the person’s self-confidence. Some people feel worse about their diets when they consume natural sugar, rather than the so-called healthier artificial options. In the long run, these artificial sweeteners and fat substitutes cause more good than harm. They are an easy way for more people to succeed on diets.

One example that we can see is that we don’t have any choice about is if artificial sweeteners are in the school or not. With the big problem in the U.S that a lot of kids and teenagers are over weight, our school sells just diet sodas and drink to help avoid this problem. But at the same time that they just sell diet food they have a lot of fried food, candy, and unhealthy food to eat for lunch. I don’t really agree of taking out all the normal drinks I think that in the high school you are big enougth to know what you should or shouldn’t eat and be able to take your own decisions. Besides that we still don’t really know the effects that artificial sweeteners can have in our body. It’s known that some artificial sweeteners have a substance that can cause serious problems with time. I personally don’t really like the taste of diet drinks and food, but there are a lot of peple that can’t eat sugar and one of the way they find to still have a sweet taste in their food is with the artificial sweeteners. If it doesn’t bring any problems to us in a long time, it can actually be a great advance and be really helpful to our lifes. And i’m pretty sure that even if it made a little injure to our life a lot of people would still consume it. I just think that places that use artificial sweetener should have to tell their clients about it and the artificial sweetener have datailed labels on the contend of this problems telling if they can harm you or not.

The American society is too ignorant to change their eating habits. No matter who tells them what to eat, their mom, a nutritionist, a friend, or a doctor, they will not listen. Dealing with sports, athletes are given a recommended diet to follow. As teenagers, we are young and believe we can eat anything. We do excercise and burn mor caleries, but there are still some in our body that build up over time. Its not what we eat today that will be burned off by that night due to the baseball game, soccer practice, etc, but it is the overall long term effect that these chemicals and foods have on our bodies. We do not look to see what chemicals are in our food and even if we look at the nutrition label its to find something that will gross our friends out, like the anchovies in zax sauce. We do not do research on our food to see what is healthy because we honestly just do not care. The companies making this food know we still eat it and we will keep buying their product as long as it is good, no matter what chemical they put in it. I know I am not the healthiest eater and I don’t look to see what is put in my food, but I do try to be healthy. Between school, sports, work, and hanging out with friends, it is nearly impossible to have time to maintain a healthy lifestyle and not to grab fast food, but I know that I do not want to have to blame McDonald’s and Taco Bell for my poor health as I grow up.

Sugar and fat substitutes may have long term effect on the human body. Hear are a few facts about these substitutes. “Known in the world as Nutrasweet or Equal, Aspartame is the most popular artificial sweetener used. It is also known to potentially cause cancer and be responsible for a wide variety of behavioral changes in humans. It can cause seizures and even death. (Feb. 1994 Department of Health and Human Services Report.).” How could something this dangerous end up on the table of almost every American? This is not the only thing that this substitute can cause. “It is considered one of the most dangerous additives in food today. Of the allergic reactions to food that are reported to the FDA, it accounts for the reason in 75% of the cases.” Is this only shocking to me? If this is one of the leading causes of allergic reactions, should we not be concerned? People are having serious problems, and it is all due to some substitute crase.

What people should be doing is paying attention to what they eat. Don’t use the excuse, “It’s diet food so I can eat all I want.”. People should just eat, be happy, and live healthy lives. We should stop trying to mess in affairs that we can not control the effects that it will have on the public, and ourselves. Who knows, where will scientist draw the boundary? Will we start to have diet fruit enhanced with artificial sugars, and have potatoes that have had there starch taken out and replaced with artificial additives? There is a reason that we have survived throughout time, we need all of the nutrition in food, fats, sugars, and starch. We need to draw the line on all of this genetic and stop all the hormones going in the foods we eat or give to the animals we eat. How can we stop this? By you taking a stand against these companies and there products.

Usually as we all eat our foods, we look to see the nutrition facts. As we look to see the nutrition facts, we always seem to notice first how much fat is in that certain product. Do we filter the food we eat by the amount of fat in it? I sure do think so. There is no possible way of eliminating fat altogether in our diets, without risking our health. Sure, some people are vegetarians and consist of a low-fat diet, but the truth is we all need fat whether we like it or not. Its not so much as the amount of fat in the food, but the amount of food we eat.

It is a good idea to eat healthier to lose weight but you can also eat healthier foods but eat the same amount of fat. For example: you can eat one doughnut which has 12 grams of fat, or you can eat a five dollar foot long that has about the same amount with toppings added. The point is that just because you eat something healthier, it doesn’t mean you are really “eating healthier”. It is just the amount of food you eat that really counts. You can eat more but it takes more excercise to balance it out (to kickstart metabolism and to burn calories).

I personally believe, that the switching between saturated and unsaturated fats doesn’t really matter. In the long run, sure it healthier, but does it really offer results? Will it really help those who pig out on fast food and say, “well its healthier because it has unsaturated fat.” I think it just gives people another excuse for their eating habits, its fast food, its not healthy, AT ALL. So lets be smart about this and eat the right amount of food, and choose the food you eat with common sense, and don’t “super-size” your fast food either… lets be smart.

(and no i didn’t talk about small amounts because im fun-sized)

One example that we can see that we don’t have any choise about artificial sweetener or not is in the school. With the big problem in the U.S that a lot of kids and teenagers are over weight, our school sells just diet sodas and drink to help avoid this problem. But at the same time that they just sell diet food they have a lot of fried candy and unhealthy food to eat for lunch.

It is very unfortunate in our world that we are given anything artificial. If it is not real then we should not be able to consume them. Things like aspartame, sucratose, acesulfameare are all types of artifical sweeteners. The chemicals in these things are all mysterious and way to complicated for our minds. Yes, they are low in calories and are not supposed to be as “bad” as natural sweeteners but they call them natural sugars for a reason. They do not have all those extra chemicals that in the long run can potentially be dangerous to us all. There are many professionals doctors that say artificial sweeteners are dangerous. Many say that artificial sweeteners can cause cancer, specifically bladder cancer. You might be wondering ‘Why does the FDA approved these potentially dangerous artificial sugars?’ When was our last recall on peanut butter or some prescription drug? Just because they say it is ok for us to ingest them does not mean it is safe. Also the FDA is not required to ”recognize” some product as safe. That is why we have so many recalls on our daliy items and goods. Scary huh. Millions of individuals consume these unnatural things and later wonder why they have some random disease. Bottom line is we have to be very careful in what we put in our bodies. If it is not natural or contains some word you can not pronounce…then you probably should not be eating it. Go to a licensed professional, like a nutritionist, and get their input on what is safe and what is not safe.

So i wonder as i eat that last piece of cake, was i eating real sugar or that artificial crap. The use of artificial sugar has become all to common in today’s world. This so called “sugar”, can provide benefits that are better than sugar? How so? This “sugar” supposedly can be healthier than the real thing, but how is that? Sugar is sugar no matter which way you look at it. So why is this product so advertised, so pressed on American society. The American weight problem cannot be solved by the simple insertion of a “sugar”, the entire diet must change. You cannot change a building by removing one brick, you must change the entire structure. So do i think this “sugar” is good for anyone, I am gonna have to say NO! It is physically impossible for a manmade creation to create something better than something created by nature. Why do we as a species think we can always better nature. In truth that is neither possible or even probable. This “sugar” should be ban, it is even thought to cause cancer. Why would we want to use something that causes us harm so as to save a few pounds. It is this foolishness that is the American Way. For the greater good right? Well sometimes the greater good is neither for everyone or anyone at all. Forget the “sugar” and focus on other thing to solve the American problem. Instead of wasting millions on research for such foolery, how about do something that will actually help this country by changing its structure and not just one brick.
